Burnt and Bound / Seeds of Change II   Seda Saar Installation: Searching for Serenity,  Descanso Gardens, Sept 2025 - Jan 2026

Originally created in response to the devastating Franklin and Palisades wildfires, Burnt and Bound II was reimagined by the artist to reflect the resilience of the earth and its people. While the wildfires left deep scars on the landscape, they also ignited a flicker of hope as we reconstruct our lives. The "seeds of change" that were once planted have sprouted and grown, providing the courage and inspiration needed to protect our only home: the Earth.

Burnt and Bound / Seeds of Change, Collaboration with artist Megan De Roma, Installation: Gallery 825, March 2025

Burnt and Bound, a collaborative installation created in 2025, serves as a poignant reflection and a call to action. It presents an artistic response to the ongoing destruction of our natural world, using charred wood, a carved, foraged tree trunk, and a native scrub oak seed to explore the delicate balance between loss and renewal, destruction and regeneration.

The burnt wood stands as a haunting reminder of wildfires fueled by climate change, a testament to both natural cycles and human negligence. The severed trunks symbolize the widespread deforestation that continues to disrupt ecosystems, while the seed pods represent a quiet yet powerful force of resilience—a reminder that even in the midst of devastation, the potential for renewal still exists.

However, renewal does not come without responsibility. This work transcends mere meditation on nature’s healing abilities; it is an act of activism. We refuse to accept the prevailing state of disregard, inaction, and the perception of environmental catastrophe as an inevitable fate. Burnt and Bound (or Seeds of Change) urges viewers to confront their complicity, move beyond passive mourning, and embrace active change.

As artists, we envision a future where destruction is not normalized, where regeneration is not an afterthought, but a fundamental priority. This installation challenges the audience to transcend the wreckage and recognize the urgency of intervention. It compels us to participate in shaping a world where renewal is not merely possible but an inevitable outcome—if only we choose it.

This piece was conceived during and after the devastating fires that ravaged Los Angeles. The artists resided on either side of the Palisades fire, and the materials selected for the installation were directly sourced from the aftermath of the event. The challenges and obstacles created by the fire were not insignificant, but they also served as a catalyst for overcoming adversity and forging a path from destruction into a hopeful and resilient future.
